Packing for a Garhwal trek without overpacking

A working list for a six-day trek, and the items people carry that they never take out of the bag.

The single biggest packing mistake is carrying clothes for every possible day. On a six-day trek you need three layers, not six changes.

Build from the base: two quick-dry t-shirts, one fleece, one padded jacket, one waterproof shell. Two pairs of trek pants. Woollen socks, one pair per two days, plus a dry pair reserved for sleeping only.

The things people forget are small and matter a lot: sunscreen for reflected snow glare, lip balm, a head torch with fresh batteries, and a second water bottle. The things people carry and never use are jeans, a towel larger than a hand towel, and a power bank bigger than 10,000 mAh.

If your bag is over twelve kilos for a six-day trek, take something out.
